GBS EVALUATION & GRADING SYSTEM
Evaluation Pattern
The evaluation of students is a continuous process involving Assignments, Case Analysis, Mini projects, Quizzes, simulations, role plays etc. This is apart from the end semester evaluation. The maximum weightage for continuous evaluation is 70% and the end semester evaluation is 30%.
Guru Nanak Business School continuously reevaluates its purpose of education and research through internal assessment, external evaluation processes and medium-term planning and goals. In this process the basic purpose gets constantly scrutinized in the light of changing business, social and educational environments. The school thus believes that our policy sufficiently meets the criteria set by the procedure of this assessment and evaluation.
Continuous Evaluation structure
Following is the evaluation structure for the different credit papers.
Each credit is equal to 50 marks assigned and for each credit, 12 sessions will be conducted for the paper, which is equivalent to 16 hours of teaching. The calculations for 12 sessions will be restricted to teaching and relevant classroom activities only.

Details of Evaluations:
5 Mark Evaluations: presentations, Quiz, Case let: To be done in the class as a surprise and needs to be given the result immediately.
10 mark Evaluations: Assignments, Problems, case study (less than 10 pages): The duration of submission is less than a week.
15 mark Evaluations: Mini projects, Case studies (more than 10 pages) and Case writing: The duration of submission/preparation is more than a week.
Midterm: Midterm exam is conducted for all papers after 8 weeks of completion of a semester. Following is the structure of midterm exam for different credits.
1 credit: There can be two sections of 5 marks each with the maximum time period of 30 minutes. One of the sections should be of objective type and the other descriptive. No choice allowed.
2 credits: There can be 2 sections of 5 marks and 10 marks respectively. The duration of examination is 50 minutes. The section with 5 marks should be objective and the other descriptive. Limited (internal) choice allowed.
3 credits: there can be up to 3 sections. The faculty is free to determine the marks for each section. The choice of having objective questions is optional. The maximum marks are 20 and the duration of exam is 1 hour 15 minutes.
End term: The detail of end term exam pattern is given in the examination policy.
CGPA: GBS follows a popular Cumulative Grade Point Average system for grading the students in evaluations as well as in offering the final PGDM degree.
CGPA is calculated based on all subjects that you take. Each subject usually comes with a credit value. Some less important subjects carry between 1 to 2 credits; important ones carry 3 to 4 credits each.
How is it calculated?
For each subject that you have successfully taken, a grade will be issued after the final exam. These grades each carry a specific point value. Typically, A carries 4.00, B carries 3.00 and C carries 2.00. each of these points will be calculated based on the credit rating of each subject, and later summed up to give you your GPA for that particular semester. For example:
Semester 1
Assume the credits for the following subjects:
Marketing (4 credits): B = 3.00
Business Law (2 credits): A = 4.00
Quantitative Techniques (3 credits): C = 2.00
(4 x 3.00) + (2 x 4.00) + (3 x 2.00) = 26 total grade point for 9 credits. Hence, your GPA for semester 1 is: 26 / 9 = 2.88 GPA for semester 1. Since this is your first semester, your GPA is also your CGPA.
Semester 2
Assume the credits for the following subjects:
Organizational Behaviour (4 credits): A = 4.00
Business Research methods (4 credits): B = 3.00
Supply chain Management (3 credits): E = 0.00 (FAIL)
Operations Management (2 credits): B = 3.00
(4 x 4.00) + (4 x 3.00) + (3 x 0.00) + (2 x 3.00) = 34 total grade point for 13 credits. hence your GPA for semester 2 is:
34 / 13 = 2.61 GPA for semester 2
now that this is your second semester, your CGPA will be calculated by combining the two. However, a direct average is wrong. CGPA is calculated NOT based on the average of GPAs per semester, but based on grade points per credit that you take. To calculate your CGPA based on the two semesters above:
[(total grade point for semester 1) + (total grade point for semester 2)] / total credit taken in all semesters
[(26) + (34)] / (9 + 13) = 2.72 CGPA
Now, let’s try the next semester where u retake the failed subject:
Semester 3
Assume the credits for the following subjects:
Supply chain management (3 credits): A = 4.00 (REPEATED SUBJECT)
Consumer behavior (3 credits): B = 3.00
Retail management (3 credits): B = 3.00
IMC (3 credits): B = 3.00
(3 x 4.00) + (3 x 3.00) + (3 x 3.00) + (3 x 3.00) = 39 total grade point for 12 credits. Hence your GPA for semester 3 is:
39 / 12 = 3.25 GPA.
Now, how does u calculate your CGPA when you have a repeated subject? Here’s the main rule: You recalculate the repeated subject by replacing the old grade with the new one. It means, in your CGPA calculation, you never failed your subject R, you actually scored A! lets see what it looks like:
[(grade points for semester 1) + (grade points for semester 2 excluding the failed subject) + (grade points for semester 3)] / [(credit for semester 1) + (credit for semester 2 excluding the failed subject) + (credit for semester 3)]
[(26) + (34 - 0) + (39)] / [(9) + (13 - 3) + (12)] = 99 / 31 = 3.19 CGPA
CGPA Grading System:
A+ 3.75 - 4.00
A 3.50 3.74
B+ 3.25 - 3.49
B 3.00 - 3.24
C+ 2.75 - 2.99
C 2.50 - 2.74
D 2.25 - 2.49
E 2.00 - 2.25
F < 1.99
I Incomplete Grade
Student should get a CGPA of more than 2.00 to be awarded a PGDM
Award of Degree: After successful completion of all the required courses through four semesters, and after submission and approval of the summer project and Research thesis, the student would be recommended for the award of “Post Graduate Diploma Management to the Academic Advisory council under the leadership of the Director / Dean. After the formal consent of the Academic Advisory Council, the students would be awarded with the “Post Graduate Diploma in Management”.
Any student who has three F grades during the four semesters and those who have even one I Grade are not eligible for the award of Diploma in any circumstances.
The Diploma’s would be formally given in a graduation ceremony conducted for the purpose.
